Holiday Yoga Schedule

Massage therapy is not just a modality to help ease physical aches and pains. It also provides many benefits for mental well-being, such as decreasing stress, anxiety and depression. As we enter the holiday season, while it is full of joy, it is also a very busy time of year. We can easily find ourselves stressed out with to-do lists, preparation, errands and cooking. It is important to make the time for self-care amidst it all. Erika Larson, LMT said, “The biopsychosocial model posits that the experience of health is multidimensional, composed of interdependent factors. Physical well-being and emotional well-being are interwoven.” Her perspective highlights how closely our bodies and minds communicate with one another, reminding us that touch can influence more than just the muscles. But how does massage therapy improve our emotional well-being? A massage therapist’s ability to create a safe space for clients, along with scientific explanations for why we feel emotionally better after massage, helps answer this question.

The skin is the largest organ, covering the entire outside of the body, and is filled with nerve endings, sensors, capillaries, glands, fat and connective tissue. Your body has about 4 million touch receptors. The sensors in the skin register touch and send signals to the brain to aid in relaxation. As researchers continue to understand these pathways, it becomes increasingly clear why therapeutic touch has such a profound impact on mood. As each of these different nerve cells are stimulated, they send signals to the brain which release endorphins that help us feel happy and relaxed. For example, one of these is dopamine which is known as our “reward hormone,” and is also released when we do something good or achieve something. Massage also increases levels of oxytocin, which is a hormone that increases social bonding and behaviors like trustworthiness, generosity, and empathy. Lower levels of stress hormones (norepinephrine, epinephrine, and cortisol) reduce heart rate, lower blood pressure, slow breathing, and relax muscles.

Sometimes emotions are discussed in relation to massage therapy as being “trapped,” or you might hear someone say “I hold my tension here.” One goal of massage is to release these trapped emotions, which can have both physical and mental/emotional benefits. This idea helps explain why people may unexpectedly feel emotional during or after a session, even when they only anticipated physical relief. “When an emotion is trapped, what is really being held is the actions or reactions the person wanted to take at the time the emotion was felt,” says Cindy Carlton, LMT/Intuitive Healing Facilitator. “If someone holds back those emotional actions over and over again, it can cause distress in the tissues—muscles and fascia that were used to hold back the reactions become tight or taut.” Carlton’s explanation emphasizes how emotional restraint can

become physically embodied over time. Massage therapy can help relax the tension in the tissues, releasing the “emotional energy” being held.

Together, these factors create an environment where clients can access deeper emotional awareness while still feeling supported. “What really makes the massage session a safe place for emotional well-being and healing is the practitioner and how comfortable they are with the client releasing emotional energy,” says Carlton. A therapist’s presence, empathy, and professionalism play a crucial role in shaping the client’s overall experience. The communication between a client and the massage therapist can help the client improve their interoceptive awareness, which includes a sense of one’s emotional state.

I encourage all of you to make the time to listen to what your body needs this time of year. I hope you can relax and enjoy the little moments this season. Wishing you all a peaceful and healthy holiday this year!
